How the 3D Weather Globe Works

We built this tool to push the boundaries of what modern web technology can achieve: a fully client-side, zero-cost weather visualization that fuses high-resolution 3D satellite imagery, real-time meteorological data, and custom GPU shaders with cinematic glow effects. No backend servers, no API keys, no usage limits — everything runs in your browser.

The Technology Behind It

3D Globe — Built with Three.js WebGL featuring an 8K AVIF satellite texture (8192×4096) from NASA's Blue Marble collection. The globe includes atmospheric rim glow, a procedural star field, and smooth camera fly-to animations when you search or click a location.

NEXRAD Doppler Radar — Powered by RainViewer's free API aggregating 1,200+ radar stations worldwide. Precipitation tiles are painted with authentic NEXRAD color gradients — green for light rain, yellow for moderate, orange for heavy, red for severe, and magenta for extreme — before being uploaded to the GPU.

GPU Mercator Shader — A custom GLSL fragment shader computes Mercator UV coordinates directly on the GPU, mapping RainViewer's Mercator-projected tiles onto the 3D sphere surface in real-time. This eliminates slow CPU reprojection and ensures buttery-smooth 60fps rendering with 3D lighting, rim glow, and emissive self-illumination for precipitation areas.

Click-to-Weather — Click any point on the globe to instantly fetch current conditions via Open-Meteo's free API: temperature, wind speed, humidity, weather condition, and precipitation. Reverse geocoding via OpenStreetMap Nominatim shows the exact city/location name — with ocean and coordinate fallbacks so you never see blank data.

NEXRAD Radar Colors with 3D Glow

Precipitation is painted with authentic NEXRAD color gradients and rendered with GPU-powered 3D lighting effects: diffuse illumination, rim glow around the globe edge, and emissive self-glow that makes storm systems pulse and light up the night side of Earth.

Auto-Refresh Every 5 Minutes

Radar data automatically refreshes every 5 minutes with the latest precipitation frames from 1,200+ stations worldwide. Multi-frame animation lets you watch storms evolve over the past 2 hours with play/pause controls and a timeline slider.

Address, ZIP & Location Search

Search any location by address, city name, or ZIP/postal code. Quick-jump buttons fly to New York, Miami, Houston, LA, Chicago, London, Tokyo, and Sydney. Works on desktop and mobile with touch-optimized controls.

Explore the Globe

The page opens with a stunning 3D Earth centered over the United States. NEXRAD-colored Doppler radar is already rendered directly on the globe surface with atmospheric glow effects. Drag to rotate, pinch or scroll to zoom.

Click for Instant Weather

Click or tap any point on the globe. A popup instantly shows the location name, current temperature, wind speed, humidity, weather condition, and precipitation. Even ocean clicks show coordinates with an "Ocean" label.

Fly to a Location

Type an address, city, or ZIP code in the search bar — or click one of the 8 quick-location buttons. The camera smoothly animates to that location with the globe rotating to center the target.

Watch Storms Move

Use the playback controls to animate precipitation movement over the past 2 hours. NEXRAD colors make it easy to distinguish light drizzle (green) from severe storms (red/magenta). The radar auto-refreshes so you always see the latest data.
