How to use JSON Lab

Paste input, select a command and its options, then run the transformation. Review diagnostics before copying or downloading the result. Input is not executed.

JSON Pointer uses slash-separated keys, with ~0 for ~ and ~1 for /. The empty pointer means the entire document. Tree paths list every value up to the display limit. Arbitrary JSONPath expressions are not evaluated. Duplicate keys and numbers that cannot be represented safely are rejected instead of silently overwritten or rounded.

Privacy and boundaries

Editor contents stay in your browser. Transformations run in a disposable worker and are never sent to a formatting or AI service. History starts disabled; enabling it writes text to local browser storage only. Clearing that history removes this tool’s saved entries, not data saved by other applications. The surrounding website may load its normal navigation and analytics, but the utility workspace is excluded from content-interaction capture.

Use the labeled operation selector for the available capabilities. Keyboard users can reach every control with Tab; Ctrl or Command plus K opens the command palette. Copy requires clipboard permission. Download creates a local text file. Clear removes the current workspace; it does not automatically delete an opted-in history. Inputs and outputs are always rendered as text, never as a runnable preview.

What is JSON formatting?

JSON formatting validates the data grammar and adds indentation for readability. It does not execute JavaScript and cannot preserve comments because standard JSON does not allow them.

JSON Lab: practical use and context

JSON Lab helps developers and data reviewers inspect a document’s structure before using it elsewhere. Its formatting, pointer and comparison operations work on data rather than executing embedded expressions.

Validate, locate, then transform

Paste a complete JSON value and validate it before investigating deeper structure. Formatting adds indentation; minification removes unnecessary layout. Tree / paths lists nested values up to the display limit. Select the operation that answers your question instead of repeatedly formatting a document when the real problem is a missing key or an unexpected value type.

Use JSON Pointer to address a particular value. The empty pointer selects the whole document, slashes separate path steps, and the documented escape sequences represent literal tilde and slash characters in keys. A pointer is not an arbitrary JSONPath expression or executable query language.

Inspect an array before comparing revisions

Load the included project object and resolve the supplied pointer to the first tool. Inspect the tree to connect that pointer with the array’s zero-based position. Then compare with the second example, which adds another tool. Review the actual values rather than interpreting a change in indentation as a new capability in the represented project.

For an API documentation example, reduce a response to non-sensitive representative fields before pasting it. Preserve the distinction between null, an empty string, an empty array and a missing property. These can carry different meanings in the receiving API even when an interface renders all of them as an empty box.

Grammar checks are not business-rule validation

Standard JSON does not allow comments, trailing commas or JavaScript expressions. Duplicate keys and unsafe numeric values are rejected rather than silently overwritten or rounded. Correct those ambiguities in the source. Valid JSON does not prove that an object matches a particular API schema, contains current information or satisfies your application’s required fields.

Conversion to YAML changes the document grammar, not the authority of its contents. Use Data Converter for the wider supported format set and review its loss boundaries. Keep a source copy for comparison whenever you transform configuration that another application will consume.
