Deleting a discount programme: 930 lines of files, two dropped tables, and a reservation lifecycle nobody needed

School discount codes existed in our codebase from migration 0035 on 10 August 2026 to migration 0049 on 18 October 2026. They were replaced by registering a school's email domain, which I wrote about separately. This post is only about the removal, because the removal was most of the work and it is the half nobody budgets for. Four files were deleted outright: File Lines lib/discounts/code-manager.ts 555 app/api/admin/discount-codes/route.ts 200 app/api/admin/discount-codes/[codeId]/route.ts 13

The Free Tier Is an Instrument, Not a Budget

Before you move a workload onto free capacity, run it there once and write down what it costs you in wall-clock and attention. Tokens are the only line item that goes to zero. Queue wait, retries, and review minutes all survive the move — and they usually get bigger. You already know the price per token. What you don't know is tokens per accepted output, attempts per accepted output, and how long a job sits before anyone touches it. Budget decisions made without those three numbers are guesses w

Hyper-V Live Migration Failed (Event 21502): A Read-First Switch, Processor, Version, and Kerberos Triage

Helpdesk: "Since we added the two new hosts last week, moving VMs to them fails. Hyper-V Manager says the migration operation failed at migration source, and the cluster logged Event 21502. One VM moves fine, three don't, and one we moved last month won't go back to the old host either. A forum post says to turn on processor compatibility for every VM, switch every host to CredSSP, allow live migration on any network, and turn off the firewall on the new hosts. Can we do that?" Not yet. "Hyper-V

Sometimes the tool becomes another task

I've noticed that it's easy to spend more time organizing work than actually doing it. You try a new productivity app, customize the setup, move everything into it, and suddenly managing the system becomes work of its own. Sometimes a basic checklist is enough. Not every problem needs another tool. I'm starting to think the best tool isn't necessarily the one with the most features. It's the one you stop thinking about once you start working.

Threat-Model the Egress, Not the Model

Threat-Model the Egress, Not the Model The thing you must defend in an AI feature is the payload, not the model, because every prompt is an outbound data transfer with your name on it. Models change weekly and pricing changes faster, so arguing about which one to call is cheap; the expensive mistake is shipping the wrong bytes. You can make that mistake once, quietly, and pay for it in an incident review months later. So the first artifact for any model-backed feature should be a boundary ledger

Our prices stopped being conversions, and the minimum charge had to move layers for it

We show prices in the currency of the country a visit comes from, and we charge in that currency too. For a long time the first half was a display feature with a footnote attached: the number on the card was a conversion from our pound price, with a tooltip saying so, and a useFormatPrice() hook that returned an approximate: boolean so any surface could ask whether what it was rendering was real. That boolean is now gone, along with the tooltip and the function that produced it. The reason is no

Scripting Your Kraken Tax Exports: Proceeds, Missing Basis, and a Python Sanity Check

Every tax season, someone who writes code for a living opens a folder of exchange exports and thinks, "I'll just script this." That is a good instinct, as long as you know what each file actually means before you start summing columns. Kraken is a useful case study because it hands you several different documents, and they do not all answer the same question. This post covers the data side: which Kraken files exist, what the IRS receives versus what only you see, and a small Python sanity check

How Small Businesses Can Find and Evaluate Government Tenders in India

Government contracts can create valuable opportunities for small businesses, contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, and service providers in India. However, finding the right tender is only the first step. Businesses must also understand eligibility requirements, prepare supporting documents, evaluate costs, and submit bids before the deadline. For a small team, managing this process manually can consume hours that could otherwise be spent on operations and business development. The good news is

Put the Free Lane Behind a Kill Switch

Put the Free Lane Behind a Kill Switch Borrowed capacity fails differently than capacity you own. Design the exit first, then wire the discount. That is the whole review in one line. Everything below covers the seam, the data flow, the failure domains, and the drill that proves the seam holds. A free model endpoint has no SLA you can enforce. A free server has no restart notice you can plan around. You do not get to page anyone when they vanish. So the boundary must absorb the loss. Your call si

Why WordPress Missed Your Scheduled Post (and How to Fix WP-Cron)

You scheduled a post for 11:00, closed the laptop, and came back after lunch to find it still sitting in the Posts list with a red "Missed schedule" label where the publish date should be. Nothing crashed. No error email arrived. WordPress just never got around to it. The cause is almost always WP-Cron, the scheduler built into WordPress. It makes one big assumption about your traffic, and when that assumption fails, scheduled posts, backups and digest emails all slip together. Here's how it wor

Proveniq: An AI License Review Is Only Useful When It Can Show Its Evidence

What happens when you download an asset, use AI to review its license, and discover later that you cannot prove where the information came from? Imagine finding the perfect illustration, icon, font, or code snippet for a project. You save it, start building, and move on. A few weeks later, you need to answer some basic questions: Where did this asset come from? Who created it? What license applies to it? Does that license permit my intended use? Can I prove why I believe it is safe to use? Somet

How to Add Business Days to a Date (and Why + 5 Days Is Wrong): A Business Day API Tutorial

"Payment is due in 5 business days." "We ship within 3 business days." "Settlement is T+1." Every one of these turns into a line of code somewhere, and that line is usually wrong. This post works through the problem one step at a time: the naive version, the weekend-aware version, the holiday-aware version, and finally a business day API call. At each step we'll see exactly which date it gets wrong. The running example is an invoice dated Monday, 23 November 2026, due in 5 business days, in the

Why New Blog Posts Reach Feed Readers Hours Late, and Which Platforms Send a WebSub Hub

A new post shows up in a feed reader only when the reader next fetches your feed. Most readers fetch on a schedule, and for a small blog that schedule is slow. Feedly's free plan checks a feed anywhere from every 30 minutes to once a day. The way around it is a WebSub hub. Your feed names a hub, your platform pings it when you publish, and readers subscribed to the hub get the post when the hub pushes it. On October 19, 2026 I fetched one feed from each of ten blogging platforms to see which one

AI-Powered Newsfeed: practical use and context

The news collection helps readers browse published items and follow their context. It is a discovery surface, not a guarantee that every headline is current, independently verified or relevant to a particular decision.

Application artwork reused from its publication image family. The interactive interface is above.

Read beyond the headline

Browse the available items and open the full article that relates to your question. Check the publication date, source and surrounding explanation before treating a headline as evidence. A collection can contain items from different periods. The order in a feed is a presentation choice, not proof of importance or a representative survey of everything happening in a subject area.

When following an external source, read its original context and distinguish reported facts, analysis and opinion. An excerpt can omit qualifications that matter. If an item concerns a changing situation, seek the latest primary source rather than relying only on the collection’s summary.

Use a news item to frame a research question

Choose an energy-related story, note its date and claim, then compare the relevant observation period in Petroleum Observatory. Keep the article’s explanation separate from the official data series. A simultaneous change in two charts does not verify a causal statement in a headline. Record what additional evidence would be needed before making that claim.

For a marketing briefing, summarize why an item matters to the audience and link to the original reading destination. Avoid copying an entire article or presenting another publisher’s reporting as your own. Relevant context is more useful than a large undifferentiated list of links.

Availability and editorial judgment

Source pages may move, require subscriptions or become unavailable. An available headline does not promise access to the complete external article. Dates and excerpts can be supplied by upstream feeds, so verify them where a decision depends on recency. The collection does not provide investment, medical or legal advice and does not independently certify all source claims.
